Mummy ” I am Homework Overload !”
Posted: February 16, 2008Previously, I wrote on the homework given to children in their primary school years.
Through many educators and parents may disagree with me, I believe that time spent studying after school should be very limited. Homework generates stress for parents.Many children wither will not do the assignments or get tired. This causes tensions to build, resulting in the exchange of angry words between parents and child.
A real story of a little girl came to school with swollen eyes. She said her father had beaten her because she could not learn her spelling words. That is illegal but it was tolerated then. Because of this beating, the girl will be scarred by those beatings and may always think she is stupid.
Then there are parents who complete the assignments for their kids just to get them over the hum, only be given a poor grade- that is the ultimate humiliation.
In short, I believe homework in primary school is appropriate for learning multiplication tables, spelling words and test reviews.
It is also helpful in training kids to remember assignments and to complete them as required. But to overload them is to invite an educational burnout.
