Sarcasm Not Funny to Kids
Posted: December 20, 2007Have you come across some kids who according to their age would be bubbly and happy and speaking like their age, but are speaking in a manner of an adults and worst full of sarcasm ? Many parents do not know that when they speak in sarcasm, their children are picking up the same habit as they do. If your family has a habit of making sarcasm as a joke to one another, please be conscious to tone down or stop such acts.
A recent study showed that young children can suffer lasting emotional damage when they are the butt of teasing that they don’t understand. They found that children under 10 years old alomits always interpret sarcastic remarks as being serious, even when they are intended as a joke. Children under 5 years old, don’t even get them at all. They are not old enough to grasp the concept of sarcasm, so they take every word seriously.
It is still not clear why some children are more easily affected by sarcasm than others, However researchers suspect that it may have something to do with the child’s home life.
Children who hear this kind of humour at hime are more likely to be made fun of, so let’s watch what we say to our kids.
The bible also states in Proverbs 10 : 19 ” When words are many, sin is not absent, but the who holds his tongue is wise.”
