Sketching Thumb is an after- image training
Posted: November 18, 2007When Sammi’s Shichida teacher asked her to sketch her thumb. I found it very amusing. I asked myself why does the teacher asked her to do so ? I have know how my thumb feels, I do not really have taken a closer look at my thumb. How does sketching your thumb works on your right brain training ? This is what I learnt later. I do hope to share with mummies visiting my blog to get your child to do so too!
This training will help the child to memorise and recall objects by image. The connection between your right and left brain will be strengthened through this training.
Step One :
Stare at your thumb for 5 seconds
Hold your left thumb 30 cm from your eyes. Stare at it for 5 secs. Concentrate and memorise the thumb in details.
Comments from me: I tried this and I realised that my nails are different from what I thought it is. The lines under my thumb are numerous and some are thicker and some are thinner.
Step Two :
Close your eyes and recall or visualise the thumb in your mind. Open your eyes and stare at teh lft thumb for another 5 seconds. Is there any difference from the one you have visualised ?
Comments from me : Yes, lots of differences. I cannot remember all details at all !
Step Three :
Draw from memory
Repeat 1 and 2 twice, then draw on paper the mental image of your left thumb. Do not refer to your thumb.
Comments from me: It seems like my thumb is different from what I have drawn. Sammi drew her thumb very well. The main details are all there. The lines, the nails, the flesh around her nail and the length of her nail.
Step Four:
Try different objects
Once you are able to recall and draw your thumb easily, try out other simple objects using the same method, then gradually move to a scenery- memorise the scene and draw.
Comments from me: I have difficult even remembering the lunch I have least drawing a scenary unless I am relax and have purposely done so. However, on my daughter, just this evening, she started to sketch out the last Saturday performance scene from her school which she acted as a genie. But she sketch out the scenes and characters of the show even when she is not involved in it. She even commented that there is a scene she does not like ( the puppets hanging on the string and a bad guy wants to throw them into the fire. ) she said she does not want to draw it as she does not like. As I flipped through her sketch book ( a 5 years old ) I cannot help but admire what she has drawn. She drew and desribe the details well. She even tell me that she wants to be an illustrator. I wonder where did she pick up this professional term from ? ( likely from her school)
