Rockets That Would Not Fire
Posted: August 23, 2008Here’s a question from a 20 year old man: ” I have no idea what to do with my life. I fell like a rocket sitting on a launch pad that just isn’t going anywhere. How can I get my engines to fire ? ”
Well, it is very difficult for some young adults like this one to bridge the gap between adolescence and adulthood and get onto a satisfying career path.
Let me offer a couple of suggestions that others have found helpful.
First, career counsellors are equipped today with a wide range of interest inventories, apitude test and temperament scales that will help a young person get acquainted with himself or herself. Consult a specialist who can spell out the possibilities.
Second, I would suggest that this young man find someone who is already working in a field that he finds interesting.
Call or write to such a person and ask for an hour of his or her time. A face-to-face meeting with a successful member of a profession or trade can be very helpful.
So, to the young man who asked the questions, I say:”The keys to your future are all around you. Just go looking for them.”
